FOOD WASTAGE

I would like to start by saying pope Francis once said “wasting food is like stealing from the poor” Every three seconds a person dies of starvation. We have heard the saying one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, but the appalling and alarming issue of food waste is increasing casually to the point that there is only trash left and not a sufficient amount to feed us all.

We have constantly heard our teachers saying ‘take as much as you want’ but yet we waste a whole lot of it? Food is a resource and we should utilise it efficiently by not throwing it in the trash. Food isn’t just the rice we see on our plates but also the demand for the needy, the handwork of the farmers who are sincere to work under the scorching sun to provide it on our plates. The energy and effort should be cherished and we should be thankful we are getting food, millions of people survive on even a single grain of rice whereas we carelessly toss it in the bin. Every day nearly 2kgs of food is wasted in our batch, do you think it is worth it? People who sleep without food pray for a single morsel we should remember that and then think of casually throwing it.

If saving food becomes a habit at an early age, one can contribute towards the prevention of hunger..think about it if this classroom represented the world population, at least two of you would have to go to bed on an empty stomach, every single day. Any one of you could have been born as one of the 800 million people who suffer from world hunger. Imagine waking up every day, with a stomach crying out to be fed- with the hunger that will never be sated. Our privileged lives make something like this seem fictitious.

Every long journey begins with small steps, and that includes the journey that is reducing as much food waste as possible. We need to be aware of the consequences of food wastage to humans, nature, and the economy., strive to end world hunger, and we need to do this right now before the consequences destroy us, and everything we live for. so ‘Don’t take more than you can eat.’ And keep in mind that you are blessed
